Bar Code Scanners
Bar code scanners, introduced in 1974, revolutionized the way we shop from products to coupons. This development freed cashiers from searching for prices as well as saving their fingers from manually pushing buttons on a cash register.Accuracy was also increased by largely removing human error from the pricing and recording of purchases.
The fixed position scanner is the one most of us are familiar with, a stationary device that reads a barcode when a product is moved over its reader. This type is also used on conveyer belts in warehouses and shipping to records and identify items or pallets which need to be sent to different destinations.Factories and farm automation systems also use this type of scanner.
Pen and handheld scanners are also seen in an everyday shopping environment. Portable scanners, shaped rather like a gun, can be used to read the bar code on a large or heavy item in your cart rather than someone having to lift it out and then replace it. Pen scanners are commonly used by stockers to record inventory as it is put on the shelves. It is small enough to keep in a pocket, thus freeing both hands to work safely.
Automatic reader bar code scanners aren't often seen by the public but they have an equally important function. This type of scanner reads documents that have been barcoded at very high speed. Some can read as many as fifty thousand documents per hour. This type of scanner is invaluable to banks, factories and other businesses that deal with a large amount of documentation. |
